Six things to check before you buy

Lifting height

Measure the rise precisely. Most residential lifts serve 4 to 14 feet, and choosing a model built for your exact rise keeps the platform safe and stable in transit.

Weight capacity

Lifts typically carry 500 to 750 lbs. Count the combined weight of the wheelchair, the rider and any equipment such as oxygen tanks, so the motor never strains.

Safety features

Look for an under-platform obstruction sensor, emergency stop, non-slip platform and a manual lowering crank for safe descent in a power outage.

Drive system

Screw drives are prized for durability in every kind of weather. Belt drives can be smoother and quieter. Your choice depends on climate and maintenance.

Weatherization

Outdoor lifts face rain and sun. Choose powder-coated steel or aluminum and weather-protected controls so the lift stays rust-free and working year-round.

Footprint and layout

Most lifts need about 5 by 5 feet. Decide whether you exit the same side you enter, go straight through, or turn 90 degrees at the top.

Mobile home porch lifts

Mobile homes are often raised on piers or blocks, and their lots are narrow, which can make a long ramp impractical or impossible. A lift fits within a standard porch or entryway, keeps the platform level in bad weather, and often costs less than building a code-compliant wooden ramp that needs staining and repair.
